The customisation behind shock absorber seals

Shock absorbers are used in cross and enduro engines and are therefore often exposed to extreme conditions, such as during the Dakar rally. The right choice with regard to the seals used in the shock absorber can then make the difference between winning or losing the stage. This requires customisation, smart technical solutions, high reliability, quality materials with a long life span, good resistance to contamination and high temperatures.

The importance of well functioning shock absorbers

Shock absorbers used in motorbikes have the task of dissipating the excess energy caused by movement of the shock absorber spring. The negative effect of riding on rough surfaces is greatly reduced by the use of shock absorbers. This is because the significantly lower amplitude of disturbances improves ride quality and increases ride comfort.

A shock absorber contains a wide variety of seals. In addition to O-rings and oil seals, these also include seals specifically developed for use in shock absorbers, such as rebound rubbers and bladders.

Coated O-rings: specially developed for shock absorbers.

Sealution coated O-rings are a good example of a sealing solution developed specifically for use in shock absorbers. By applying a special coating, the resulting frictional resistance is considerably reduced. In this way, performance is greatly improved. Compared to standard seals, this coating also reduces the stick-slip effect.

Reducing frictional resistance with a special rubber compound

During its service life, a coated seal is subject to wear and tear. As a result, the frictional resistance slowly increases. Depending on specific circumstances, this can be undesirable in some cases. Sealution offers its customers a solution for this: the possibility to mix special additives into the rubber compound. In this case the rubber itself gets a reduced frictional resistance. Wear and tear will then no longer have any influence. There will no longer be a gradual increase in frictional resistance.
